IBM conducts its research on superconductors in Switzerland and its personal computer research in Japan. NEC operates a basic research institute for information technology near Princeton University. Mitsubishi conducts software research in a laboratory across the street from MIT. Canon develops new technology in Palo Alto in close proximity to Stanford University and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, and virtually ever other major car maker operates state-of-the-art vehicle design centers in Southern California. Innovation has become global in nature, as multinational enterprises establish a growing number of research and development (R&D) laboratories in offshore locations.
