ABSTRACT

Pregnancy should not mean confinement. New guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology reflect current best practice in recommending that significant levels of exercise should continue during pregnancy in order to maintain cardiovascular fitness and muscle condition (Artal 2003). Clearly any serious preexisting medical condition must be taken carefully into account, as must any problem developing during pregnancy. Overall, the benefits of maintaining fitness outweigh any risks from continuing to exercise.
