ABSTRACT

Bursa • Bursitis may be diagnosed by USS, if there is fluid distension of a known bursa.

This would appear as a dark hypochoic area.

Soft tissue swellings • USS can aid in establishing a diagnosis with soft tissue masses by providing

information on dimensions and morphological characteristics of the swelling such as: —surface contour and definition —internal structure/contents —relationship to the surrounding structure

• The accuracy of percutaneous core needle biopsy (when indicated) may also be increased by using USS to guide the biopsy of these soft tissue swellings.
