ABSTRACT

In order to envisage the role of entrepreneurship and venture businesses in redefining the value of intellectual property in Japan, it is very important to analyse the recent initiative of the Japanese government to make Japan a ‘nation built on intellectual property’. In this chapter, after reviewing all the main points of the new initiative of the Koizumi administration, two aspects will be highlighted; how these efforts will encourage entrepreneurship and how they will promote the valuation of high-value added intangible assets. For the latter topic, the recent reports of METI and the Japan Patent Office (JPO) will be examined. Last, some of the remaining problems will be pointed out.
