ABSTRACT

In looking at the growing space demand of existing firms we are dealing with one of the most acute and distressing problems of old industrialised areas. Surveys on partly and totally relocated firms in West Germany reveal that, even in the seventies, the lack of space and buildings was the most important factor in relocation. The destination of expanding firms is well-known: most are just moving to the outskirts of their agglomeration area where they take up areas of open land.
