Thus two eighteenth-century poets, one Chinese and one Vietnamese, expressed very different views on the expansion of Chinese empires. Lê Quý Đôn questions the need for imperial expansion beyond the originally limited domains of ancient times. Ji Yun, writing from Xinjiang, celebrates military conquest which brings peace and prosperity. Both implicitly raise the question: Why do empires expand?
