ABSTRACT
This chapter is a preliminary attempt to bring together medical information contained in the bamboo and wooden strips that are scattered through the Juyan and other north-western frontier ancient beacon and archaeological sites in the Dunhuang region. The larger part of the content of these documents is variously concerned with matters in the practical administration of military medicine and I offer new and revised transcriptions and analysis to emphasize the fundamental importance of textual scholarship in reconstructing medical history.
