ABSTRACT

The Atlantic Records subsidiary Atco Records was set up in 1955 as the niche of Atlantic cofounder Herb Abramson, who had returned from military service that year. ATCO opened the white pop market for Atlantic through the success of Bobby Darin (19581962) and Sonny and Cher (1965-1968). In the late 1960s, Atlantic placed a number of American rock groups, notably Buffalo Springfield, on the label, as well as British bands such as the Bee Gees and Cream.
