ABSTRACT

American vocalist, pianist, accordionist, arranger, and composer of popular songs; born in Brooklyn. He began as a performer, then made arrangements and composed television and radio commercials. His composition “Mandy” was a hit in 1974 (Bell #45613); he followed it with “It’s a Miracle” (Arista #0108; 1975), “I Write the Songs” (Arista #0157; 1975), “Looks Like We Made It” (Arista #244; 1977), and “Can’t Smile without You” (Arista #0305; 1978). Manilow had 18 albums on the charts between 1975 and 1985; those with the longest chart life were Tryin’ to Get the Feeling (Arista #AB4060; 1975), 93 weeks; This One’s for You (Arista #AB4090; 1976), 92 weeks; and Live (Arista #AL8050), 87 weeks. Manilow’s career as a pop hitmaker has been in eclipse since the mid-1980s. Nonetheless, from time to time, he enjoys renewed popularity. In 2001, a greatest hits package of his earlier recordings sold unexpectedly well, leading him to hit the road once again in the following year.
