The properties that determine the passage of an electric current are analogous to properties concerning mechanical motion. The analogies are: (1) inductance = mass; (2) capacitance = compliance; (3) resistance = friction or viscosity. Thus for every mechanical situation there is an equivalent electric circuit situation, and the solution of a problem in one medium is equivalent to the solution in the other. This fortunate fact of nature makes possible, among other things, electrical recording of sound.
