ABSTRACT

One of the record brands controlled by Universal Music Group. Recording under this label name began in the Netherlands in 1950, and branched out into Germany, Austria, Belgium, and (upon acquisition of the French Polydor Co.) in France. Reciprocal agreements were made with Columbia in the U.S. in 1951, and Philips repertoire appeared in America on the Epic label (a Columbia subsidiary) from 1955. Repertoire from Columbia was provided to Philips, rather than EMI, Ltd. In 1961 there was an exchange of material between Philips and Mercury Records.
