ABSTRACT

French bass, born Pol-Henri Plançon in Fumay. His opera debut was in Lyons in 1877. In 1883 he sang Mephistopheles at the Paris Opéra, the first of more than 100 times he would perform that role there in 10 seasons. He appeared first at the Metropolitan Opera in 1893, and remained until 1908. Plançon had more than 50 roles, including Wagnerian parts and the bass-baritone repertoire of the French/Italian composers. He died in Paris.
