ABSTRACT

A device, commonly known as a preamp, added to an amplifier to accommodate the very low voltage output from pickups and tape recorders and to raise that voltage to a point that will drive the amplifier. For example the output level of a cartridge may be 1-5 millivolts; the preamplifier could raise it to 1-1.5 volts. The preamp may also provide frequency-response equalization and other functions as well. It may be built into the turntable or the amplifier, or may appear as a separate component.
