ABSTRACT

An American record issued from 1949 to 1971; Bob Weinstock was the founder. The label was significant for its issues of the cool jazz school of the 1950s and 1960s. Sessions included such artists as Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Thelonious Monk, and Lennie Tristano. John Coltrane, Barry Harris, and Pat Martino also appeared on Prestige. In addition to their original pressings, Prestige leased classic sessions from other labels for reissue. In May 1971 the label was sold to Fantasy Records, in San Francisco, which concentrated on LP (and later CD) reissues of the early Prestige material. [Ruppli & Porter 1980 is a complete label list.]
