ABSTRACT

German/American pianist, composer, and conductor, born in Berlin. At age six he entered the Hochschule für Musik, Berlin; in 1938 his (Jewish) family had to leave Germany and took up residence in Paris. Previn studied at the Conservatory there, and had lessons from Marcel Dupré. In 1939 the family transferred to Los Angeles, where Previn continued his studies and took American citizenship in 1943. He worked as an orchestrator and music director for MGM in Hollywood, and also performed as a jazz and concert pianist. He won Academy awards for scoring the films Gigi (1958), Porgy and Bess (1959), Irma la douce (1963), and My Fair Lady (1964).
