ABSTRACT

Founded in 1936 by Peter Walker, as the Quad Loudspeaker and Electronics Co. One of the oldest audio-product enterprises still in operation, Quad was founded by Peter Walker in 1936, under the name Acoustical Manufacturing Co. Although it originally specialized in producing public address systems and amplifiers, Walker was also interested in loudspeaker design and in 1949 he introduced the Corner Ribbon Loudspeaker, a system that was notable for its ability to reproduce very clean high frequencies. In the same year, the company name was changed to QUAD, which cryptically stood for “Quality Unit Amplified Domestic.”
