ABSTRACT

An American record devoted to sacred music, issued in the 1920s, by the Rodeheaver Record Co. (named for trombonist and gospel singer Homer Rodeheaver) of Chicago. The Rodeheaver firm was listed in the Chicago directory of 1915, and there was also a branch in Philadelphia. By June 1921, the firm had New York offices. It was reported in October 1921 that C.R.“Johnnie” Johnson, the recording expert who had inscribed the voices of Florence Nightingale and Alfred Tennyson in 1888, had joined Rainbow Records, and Thomas P. Ratcliff was the general manager. Ratcliff left Rainbow in April 1922 to join the Aeolian Co. L.E. Gillingham was reported to be general manager of the Rodeheaver Record Co. in July 1922. From 1923-1929, the firm continued to be listed in the Chicago directory, but no listing appeared in the 1929-1930 directory or thereafter. [Rust 1978.]
