ABSTRACT

Danish tenor, born in Copenhagen. He studied engineering, then voice, and made successful concert tours of Europe. From 1929 to 1945 he was with the Berlin State Opera, and again from 1949. He also appeared with the Vienna State Opera in 1936-1958 and sang often in Bayreuth and Salzburg. Roswaenge was greatly acclaimed, and was compared favorably to Enrico Caruso. Among his hundred roles, Radames and Canio were outstanding, but he also gave remarkable interpretations in Fidelio and in lesserknown operas such as Ivan Susanin and Wille’s Königsballade. He died in Munich.
