ABSTRACT

British conductor, born Harold Malcolm Sargent in Stamford. He studied organ, then served in the infantry during World War I. In 1921 he began conducting and during the 1920s led the D’Oyly Carte Opera Co. and the Ballets Russes, plus the Royal Choral Society from 1928. Sargent directed the Halle Orchestra in 1939-1942, the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1942-1948, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1950-1957. He also directed the Promenade Concerts in London from 1948 to 1966. There were numerous world tours with his various orchestras. He died in London.
