ABSTRACT

Austrian/American pianist, born in Lipnik. A child prodigy, he studied with Theodor Leschetitzky from 1891 to 1897, and then began public performances. He lived in Berlin and concertized there, playing recitals with violinist Carl Flesch, then teaching at the Hochschule får Musik. His American debut was in 1921. Schnabel was universally acclaimed for his Beethoven interpretations and for his Mozart. He lived in New York from 1939, taking citizenship in 1944, but finally returned to Europe. He died in Morschach, Switzerland.
