ABSTRACT

A male vocal quartet that recorded for Victor from 1917, and for various labels under various pseudonyms. Later they called themselves the Shannon Quartet, and made Victors until 1928. The original membership was Charles Hart and Harvey Hindermyer, tenors; Elliott Shaw, baritone; and Wilfred Glenn, bass, who organized the group. In 1918 Lewis James replaced Hindermyer. Hart was replaced by James Melton; others who sang tenor were Franklyn Baur, Charles Harrison, Frank Parker, and Robert Simmons. Ed Smalle joined the group at times, singing and/or playing the piano accompaniment. In 1925 the Victor recordings were made by Baur, James, Shaw, and Glenn. In that year the group took the name the Revelers, although they also continued with the Shannon name. The Shannon Four sang a more traditional quartet style; the Revelers a jazzy modern style.
