ABSTRACT

An Audio Engineering Society member, Shure was born in Chicago and earned a degree in geography from the University of Chicago. Known professionally as S.N. Shure, he started the Shure Radio Co. in 1925, which was a distributor of parts for home radio set builders. Eventually he was joined by his brother in the business, and the company was renamed Shure Bros. Shure was interested in technology as much as business enterprise, and it was not long until he became interested in microphone design. In 1938 he helped Ben Bauer invent the world’s first single-element directional microphone, called the Unidyne, which was marketed in 1939 and later became the design foundation for the later, world-renowned SM57 and SM58 models.
