ABSTRACT
In the 1950s several manufacturers produced discs that rotated at half the speed of the long-playing record, to double the amount of content material. Turntables were marketed with the 16 2/3 speed as well as 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Sound quality did not prove acceptable for music, but the speed was used for talking books and other literary recordings until the cassette became available.
