ABSTRACT

The tendency of a spinning disc on an analog record player to draw the cartridge, stylus, and playing end of the pivoting tone arm toward its center. The result will be slightly higher stylus tracking pressure on one side of the groove than the other. Antiskating mechanisms are often used to combat this tendency. A tangential tone arm, which tracks the record by mounting the arm on a sliding mount that does not pivot at all, eliminates skating force. Skating force is a nonissue with digital recordings.
