ABSTRACT

Russian tenor, born in Yaroslavl. He studied law in Moscow, graduating in 1894, but also traveled with an Italian opera troupe, and decided to make singing his career. His debut was in 1897 at the Bolshoi, and he remained with that company through his career, singing also at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and throughout Europe. He was at La Scala in 1904-1906. His great roles were Lenski in Eugene Onegin, Faust, Des Grieux, and Alfredo. Sobinov also excelled in solo recitals (Nicolas Slonimsky was his accompanist during 1918-1919), and was idolized by the public, especially by young girls. He died in Riga.
