ABSTRACT
The process of registering and reproducing sonic signals. Various means and devices have been applied to this task, beginning with the Phonautograph of 1857, proceeding through cylinder phonographs and disc Gramophones, wire and tape recordings, cassettes, compact discs, and DAT. A description of the way each of those recordings is made is given in the appropriate article.
