ABSTRACT

A U.K. cylinder record issued from 1904-1907 by the Phonograph Exchange Co., 4 White Lion St., Norwich; and from September 1905 at 73 Farringdon St., London. One of the early issues was of the bells of St. Peter Mancroft Church, in Norwich, recorded in

the belfry. An important artist was Maude Dewey, “champion lady whistler of the world,” recording bird songs. The Welsh Bethesda choir was also recorded. Most of the repertoire, however, was of the music hall type. [Andrews 1979/10.]

An American disc record first advertised in March 1907, made by Hawthorne and Sheble. Matrices were from Columbia. Production ceased with the demise of H & S in 1909, but sales continued in U.K. for a time.
