ABSTRACT

Russian/American violinist, born in Kremenetz, Russia. He was taken to the U.S. as a child, studied violin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1928-1931), and made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at age 11. Then he toured Australia and Europe, establishing himself as one of the world’s major artists. From 1955 he was part of an important trio, with pianist Eugene Istomin and cellist Leonard Rose. He is also distinguished for his humanitarian activities and for his successful efforts to save Carnegie Hall from destruction.
