ABSTRACT

American jazz string bassist, born Leroy Stewart in Englewood, New Jersey, on 21 Sep 1914. He studied in Boston and played with various groups there. He was in New York in the 1930s, and teamed with guitarist Slim Gaillard to from Slim and Slam, a novelty/jazz group. Then in the 1940s he performed with Art Tatum, Benny Goodman, and his own trio; and made a fine series of records with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. He did important work with Roy Eldridge in the 1950s. During the 1960s he toured Europe. In 1973 he was again with Goodman, in the Rainbow Room, New York. He died in Binghamton, New York.
