ABSTRACT

A U.K. firm founded in 1985, located in East Barnet, Hertfordshire. It offers important compact disc reissues of historical material, originally drawing on early (acoustic-era) recordings and radio broadcasts, but then broadening its reach into the vinyl era of recording. Symposium has developed its own process for remastering early recordings, particularly made in the acoustic era, which it calls the “Authentic Transfer Process.” The company has issued early recordings of opera, as well as early instrumental recordings on piano and violin. A U.K. firm that made in 1931 a combination gramophone, radio, and motion picture projector, sold as the Synchrophone. Hans Knudsen, inventor of the machine, had tried to promote it through an earlier firm, Synchrophone Co., Ltd. (1919-1928). Twelve-inch records, with the label name Synchrophone Record, were produced to give sound to the silent films projected. The user was required to start the record and film at the same time, guided by appropriate markings. The company was in liquidation in October 1935. Arthur Woollacott bought the business on 3 Jan 1936 and set up the Synchrophone (1936) Co. It was the earliest label to have a female as recording expert, Ursula Greville. [TMR #46 (June 1977) presented an extended advertisement of the firm.]
