ABSTRACT

The rate of tape motion, usually stated in inches per second (IPS), of a magnetic tape as it passes the recording or playback head of a tape recorder or tape deck. In the U.S., professional tape speeds have been 30 inches per second (IPS) and 15 IPS. Consumer recording has been at 7 1/2 IPS or 3 3/4 IPS, although 1 7/8 IPS and the higher speeds are sometimes available. In the Philips audiocassette the tape travels at 1 7/8 IPS. Microcassette recorders use a speed of 15/16 IPS.
