ABSTRACT

Tiny Tim’s strange appearance (long, stringy hair and ill-fitting, hippie clothing) and warbling renditions of Tin Pan Alley chestnuts made him the most popular camp novelty artist of the late 1960s. Born Herbert Khaury, in New York City, he spent many years perfecting his act under pseudonyms such as Darry Dover and Larry Love. By the mid1960s, he began building a cult audience, singing to his own ukulele accompaniment at adult nightclubs and, by 1968, in rock venues such as the Fillmores East and West. After appearing on The Tonight Show (NBC), he became an instant celebrity; he became a frequent guest on the Carson program as well as Laugh-In. His marriage to 17-year-old Victoria May “Miss Vicky” Budinger was broadcast on The Tonight Show, 15 Dec 1969, allegedly drawing the widest audience in the show’s long history.
