ABSTRACT

The Victor Concert Orchestra coexisted with this group, and was presumably similar in membership, as it was in repertoire. By the time of the 1927 catalog, the Victor Orchestra had been renamed the Victor Symphony Orchestra (the Concert Orchestra was connected to it by a “see also” reference), and there was also a Victor Salon Orchestra, with Nathaniel Shilkret directing. In the 1938 catalog Shilkret conducted the Victor Symphony Orchestra on both black label-where all the above ensembles had been kept-and on a Red Seal album of John Alden Carpenter’s Skyscrapers (#M-130). Claude Lapham directed the Victor Symphony on a second Red Seal, doing a work of his own, Mihara Yama (#11895). In the 1940 catalog the Symphony Orchestra had three Red Seal items; and the Victor Salon Group and Orchestra was well represented on Red Seal, directed by Shilkret, with various George Gershwin medley records, plus other Broadway musical “gems.”
