ABSTRACT

A U.K. label issued from 1920 by the Aeolian Co., Ltd.; at first styled the AeolianVocalion label. In January 1925 the Aeolian Co., Ltd., sold its record business to a newly incorporated entity, the Vocalion Gramophone Co., Ltd. Vocalion records continued to appear from this source into 1927, then the label was terminated. In 1932 the Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Co., Ltd., bought the business of the Vocalion Gramophone Record Co., Ltd., and proceeded to form a new Vocalion Gramophone Co., Ltd., the prior firm being in liquidation. Then in March 1937 Decca Record Co., Ltd., acquired the record interests of Crystalate; and in 1951 the label was brought back once more. Like the American Vocalion label, the U.K. record was distinguished for its jazz and popular artists, many taken from the U.S. masters. Vocalion remains an active label, distributed in the U.S. by MCA.
