ABSTRACT

She composed Zodiac Suite and made a successful recording of it (Asch #620, #621; 1945); the work was performed in Carnegie Hall by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Another fine disc was her “Waltz Boogie” (Victor #20-2025; 1946). She continued to record through the early 1950s, when a religious conversion led her to retire from music-making for the next decade and a half. She returned in the 1970s, beginning with From the Heart (Chiaroscuro #103; 1970). Williams formed her own label, Mary, in the mid-1970s to issue her own recordings.
