ABSTRACT

American popular singer, born in Chillicothe, Ohio. She sang in clubs and on television in Columbus,Ohio, made a tour with Rusty Bryant’s band, and went on to acclaimed performances in New York as a jazz and rhythm and blues singer. Her 1964 record, “How Glad I Am” (Capitol #5198) put her name on the charts for 14 weeks and won her a Grammy. “Face It, Girl, It’s Over” was another of her seven chart singles (Capitol #2136; 1968). Wilson made 22 solo chart albums, notably Hollywood-My Way (Capitol #2712; 1963), 30 weeks on the charts, and Yesterday’s Love Songs-Today’s Blues (Capitol #2012; 1964). She was a skilled ensemble vocalist as well as soloist, making notable albums with George Shearing in 1961 and with Cannonball Adderley in 1962. Wilson remained with Capitol through 1984, then moved to Columbia. Her last hit album was The Two of Us, with Ramsey Lewis (Columbia #39326; 1984). In 2000 she signed with Telarc Jazz. Many of her original albums remain available on CD, as do various collections of her hits.
