ABSTRACT

Neil Young is one of the great talents, albeit highly idiosyncratic, within the rock music scene. An accomplishment composer and sensitive song interpreter, his material often seemed ill-suited to his singing capabilities, reducing his vocals to an off-key whine. A lyrical, intense guitar player, his extended pieces could sometimes meander aimlessly. Nevertheless, it could be argued that the refusal to be predictable, even to the point of undercutting his commercial potential, has been a major factor in his retaining a substantial following since the 1960s.
