ABSTRACT
Driving into a new community, we easily identify Main Street School, a low, free-standing unit with an American flag prominently displayed. Although there is constant bustle in front of the city hall and the library, we see people at the school only at predictable entrance and dismissal times. The physical setting suggests the school is important, but this setting also creates barriers which separate the school from the rest of the community. We notice that fences, shrubs and vacant land mark off the school. The school building seems to be an ornament rather than an integral part of the community.
