ABSTRACT

Those who see school as separate from the rest of life, believe school serves as a safe haven for students, isolating them from real world problems such as unruly people and rush-hour traffic. Not only are they removed from these elements which are perceived as negative in society, but additional precautions are taken to ‘protect’ them from problems such as poverty (by providing free meals when needed) and from the cruel, complex and confusing adult world (by guaranteeing each child a place in some school and reducing frustration by simplifying tasks). These are all considered ways to protect children.
