ABSTRACT
Kevin Hart : We decided a while back to talk about John 8:1-11, a very familiar story, usually known as the “woman taken in adultery.” We see the woman only for a moment or two, and then only in stark relief. Was the discovery of her adultery set up by her husband so he could get a divorce? Or is her husband an injured party? Where is the man with whom she was found? None of these things are mentioned in the story, but they press upon it, and that pressure helps to make it such a powerful narrative. Like so many biblical stories, it leads us to speculate what happens outside the narrative frame. Did the woman become pregnant? If so, what happened to her and her child? Where did the woman live after she was dismissed by Jesus? And what happened to the child when he or she was born?
