ABSTRACT

Motivational interviewing, developed by Miller and his associates,1 is an effective strategy for engaging and treating patients with substance-related disorders.2-4 However, investigation of the efficacy of motivational interviewing with psychiatrically ill substance-abusing patients has not been evaluated. We adapted motivational interviewing for use with substance-abusing patients with DSM-IV mood and psychotic disorders and conducted a pilot study to assess how effective it is for preparing them to participate in a partial hospital program. We hypothesized that motivational interviewing would increase dual-diagnosis patients' participation in the program and improve treatment outcome.
