ABSTRACT

Hammersmith School was formed from a very large-scale amalgamation consisting of three schools, Hammersmith County, a mixed comprehensive, Hammersmith Girls, a girls school and Christopher Wren, a boys school. This took place long before Hammersmith and Fulham became a local education authority (LEA) and I had no direct involvement in or knowledge of it. Hammersmith and Fulham became an LEA in April 1990. I knew that we were to inherit a school with major problems. In fact, we were to set up an LEA where the majority of schools in the secondary sector were problematic.
