In the preface to his seventeenth-century classic, The Anatomy of Melancholy, Robert Burton declared, ‘I write of melancholy, by being busy to avoid melancholy.’ Very nearly the same sentence, and exactly the same logic, can be applied to the study of school ineffectiveness.
