ABSTRACT

As I dwell on the notion of giving and receiving mutually, an unsettling comment by Wolcott (1995) on the darker side of fieldwork surfaces.

One cannot help but assume an air of self-righteousness in getting the word out… Perhaps I have become jaded after attending so many national and international meetings and hearing so many fieldworkers describe the plight of so many peoples for so many years-and I must admit to having indulged in such efforts myself-but I have begun to regard my own efforts as essentially selfserving and self-satisfying as well.
