ABSTRACT
The advantage of being an English academic working outside the United Kingdom is essentially twofold. Firstly, it is normally several days before I see the English daily papers-and by that time news is generally too dated to merit comment-and secondly, because it is easier to relate British events to what is happening in other countries. Distance certainly lends a sense of perspective, if not always enchantment!
