ABSTRACT

It is hard to write about Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the context of early years education without wondering where its relevance lies. Why should very young children engage in work on machines? The two little girls in the title discussing the difference between an interactive book on the computer and its traditional counterpart put their finger on an important point. Computers do things that other educational tools can’t.1 It isn’t simply the obvious issues such as making sounds and presenting attractive graphic displays; computers can motivate, reward and facilitate in ways that makes learning exciting and attractive for pupils. It may also provide access to areas of the curriculum or education for pupils who would previously have been excluded.
