      ABSTRACT

      In this chapter I shall draw on four research paradigms for exploring early childhood education and care. Each has been chosen to represent a wide array of research methods; all have contributed, and will contribute, to policy and practice. I shall concentrate on children’s learning through the formal and informal curriculum because it is clear that children experience a curriculum (in its broadest sense) in many kinds of preschool settings, including the home.
