ABSTRACT

A few years ago I was asked to speak at a conference about primary education in the millennium, a talk which was written up (in Pugh and McQuail, 1995) and became known as my ‘vision’. I took the year 2010 and described an early childhood centre for children aged from birth to 6 attached to a primary school. The centre was part of a flexible network of services for families with young children, next door to a health centre and providing a drop-in facility for local childminders. There was a range of services for parents, including discussion groups about bringing up children and access to adult education classes and training opportunities, and parents were fully involved in all aspects of their children’s learning and in the centre’s management.
