ABSTRACT

Having been born some x number of years ago to Negro parents living in a colored community and growing up to be a proud African American woman, life for me “ain’t been no crystal stair.” I’ve experienced the low roads and the high roads. As Executive Assistant to the President at The Florida State University with the responsibility for Human Resources including Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, I believe that I experienced high roads while providing leadership for the initiation of several innovative programs. These have been designed to enhance the status of people of color and women. One such program, The League of Mentors, is the focus of this chapter. As an action researcher and mentor to many, I am especially proud of the League of Mentors and its many benefactors, both mentors and mentees.
