ABSTRACT
This chapter describes pathologies that more often necessitate or complicate adult admission to acute wards.
Exchange of gases in the lungs relies on ventilation (volume of air reaching alveoli), perfusion (volume of blood in pulmonary capillaries) and diffusion (exchange of gases between the two). Respiratory disease can occur when one or more of these are inadequate.
